All tourists like to walk around Heraklion, starting at the fishing harbour close to the modern port, what will strike first is the Venetian fortress CASTELLO DEL MOLO (KOULES) at the harbour gate. The fortress is first attested in the early 13th century the earliest depiction by the Florentine monk Cristoforo Buondelmonti in 1429.
