The cathedral was built between 1877 and 1883 in the center of Saigon district departmental plans by the French engineer Baurad. Neo-Romanesque, it has two towers of 40m high, topped with metal arrows. On the square stands a statue of the Virgin Mary. With the approval of the Vatican, on 7 and December 8, 1959, the cathedral was consecrated basilica of Saigon.
