Wieringen used to be an island. Now it stands out in the Dutch landscape as icon from ancient times in a relatively modern surrouding. So in a way it remained an island. Although one can now reach it without having to take a ferry, you can't help but feeling being on an island. Besides the archaic landscape, formed during the one but last ice age, the island also has an interesting history. Several archeolical findings, amongst others a silver treasure, proof that the Vikings once lived on this island. With a sunset like this one might think time stands still and it seems as if those viking days are all but gone.
