The entire province of Tyrol,which was created under Count Meinhard II in the 13th century,owes its name to Tyrol Castle. Around 1140,the Counts of Vinschgau called themselves Counts of Tyrol for the first time. Between 1140 and 1160,Tyrol Castle was mentioned as the ancestral castle of the Counts of Tyrol.
