At the end of the 17th century, the religious refugees from France, settled by Landgrave Karl in the newly founded Oberneustadt, increasingly tried to build their own church. In 1697 their request was granted and on 3 August 1698 Landgrave Karl laid the foundation stone for the church building on his 45th birthday. On February 12,1710,the church was consecrated by the French preacher. In 1867,the last service in French took place inside. The building was severely damaged by Allied bombing in the autumn of 1943. The dome and the entire interior were lost. In 1957,the greatly simplified building could be used again as a church. On 1 January 2008,the parish of the Karlskirche was merged into the newly created parish of Kassel-Mitte.
