The Seven Mile bridge was built by Henry Flagler as part of the Overseas Railroad to Key West. After a hurricane shut down the railroad, Florida purchased this bridge and used it as part of the overseas highway to Key West. Today this 2.2 mile section is used for pedestrians, fishermen, and bicyclists and connects to Pigeon Key. The new seven mile bridge can be seen running alongside the old bridge.
