Most of the Indian Paintbrush that you see in the Colorado Rockies tends to be more reddish or orange-ish. This one, growing near the Chicago Lakes in the Mount Evans Wilderness, was a beautiful magenta. This year’s wildflowers have been stunning throughout the Colorado Rockies. This alpine avens was one of thousands that I saw on the hike to Chicago Lakes in the Mount Evans Wilderness. A beautiful white stock resting its long orange beak on its breast. A beautiful sunflower growing in the Garden of the Gods, with Cathedral Rock in the background. While hiking in the Wild Basin Area of Rocky Mountain National Park, I came across this huge Bull Moose. He allowed me to hang out with him for an hour and a half, taking photographs and watching him eat. When I took this photo, he had realized that something was nearby. Within a second, he looked directly at me and let out a massive snort to warn me that he knew that I was there. More pictures and the story of my encounter with him are available at SheaOliver.com. There are still few things as relaxing and peaceful as breaking through the forest to find a gentle cascading mountain stream. It invites you to take off your backpack, sit down, and be still. While one might be tempted to think that this sign is at the beginning of your hike, the truth is that it is at the beginning of the trail for Chicago Lakes. However, to get to this sign, the trailhead is about a mile and a half away. As you near Chicago Lakes in the Mount Evans Wilderness, the foliage becomes extremely green and lush. This columbine had managed to grow higher than the surrounding plants, and was flourishing next to the trail. On a hike to Chicago Lakes in the Mount Evans Wilderness, I saw this bee flitting from flower to flower. He became very relaxed, but focused, as he lighted on this Colorado Tansy Aster Flower. It was very nice of him to let me take a number of pictures as he worked. Can you imagine coming to a place like this to unwind and commune with nature? It would be wonderful. Even though it was the end of July, the morning air was brisk enough to justify the fire. This Bull Moose in Rocky Mountain National Park has a seriously big rack. Female moose partially choose their mates based on the size of his antlers. The males also use their antlers to fight rivals, although they will often display their rack to try to discourage competition.
I came across this moose while hiking through the Wild Basin Area. I was able to spend about an hour and a half with him, taking photographs and watching him eat. More pictures and the story of my encounter with him are available at SheaOliver.com. In a year with overwhelming numbers of wildflowers in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, this columbine grew, surrounded by other yellow wildflowers. Driving through the area known as North Park, in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, I spotted this old, abandoned wagon just a little ways off the highway. The decades of its usefulness were long gone, but it was obvious that it had been well used through those years. Nestled in the North Park area of the Colorado Rocky Mountains sits the Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge. An old wooden footpath crosses a marshy riparian area, featuring long grass and mountains and clouds in the distance This bridge in the Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge crosses a small creek in a riparian area, in the high plains region known as North Park, in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. A sign reading “Area Beyond This Sign Closed” on an abandoned barn in the Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge. These two trees fell together to block a hiking trail in the forest. Marmots are curious creatures that live up in the mountains. This little fellow was climbing around a huge pile of timber when I came across him. He looked at me, and then scampered into the wood pile, only to emerge a few moments later near the top of the pile. We chatted for a bit while he posed for a few pictures. He insisted that he wasn’t a professional model, but the way he worked the set, I’m just not sure. Sometimes getting lost in the forest is the best way to find yourself.

There are days wandering through the mountains here in Colorado where I am completely taken aback by the beauty of a simple scene. This was one of those times when I realized that I was standing in a magical place of absolutely beauty. On a solo hike, right near the end of the trail, I had to cross through a herd of cattle. Most the herd was relaxing and didn't care one bit about my presence. This bull, however, was less impressed with my presence. I had to walk with 8 meters of him, and he never took his eyes off of me! While many like to see these creatures in their nature habitat, finding a rattlesnake in the wild can be a frightening occurrence. In the wind-swept area known as North Park, CO, is the Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge. This old barn has long been abandoned, and it just sits as the elements continue to take their toll.
